Features and design
Aiaiai is known for creating some pretty radical designs when it comes to their headphones, and these tracks headphones are no exception. If you remember back to the days of the original Sony Walkman and other cassette players, their on-ear headphones typically consisted of a metal headband that the drivers slid up and down to create the perfect fit. The Aiaiai Tracks headphones employ the same principle, where the drivers and their clips slide up and down on an inside tracks of the headband; not the outside like the headphones of yester-year.
There are three key components to the Aiaiai Tracks headphones, the drivers, the steel headband and the driver clip. There are integrated microphone and player controls on the right driver (you have to look at the Y cable spilt to determine driver placement) and about 6 inches down the line. The middle button plays, pauses, calls, and skips forward and backward, while the top and bottom buttons control the volume levels.
These headphones use a 40mm on-ear driver with a speaker sensitivity of 112 +/- 3dB rating and a frequency response of 20Hz to 20KHz. Included with the headphones are two extra colored clips.
Testing and use
For our testing we tried the Aiaiai Tracks headphones on an iPhone 3G, iPhone 4 and Apple iPad ( first generation). We broke these headphones in for 20 hours before testing. Getting these headphones to fit comfortably isn’t too hard; simply insert the drivers into the top tracks of the headband and slide them down to the desired fit. The band will squeeze the drivers into your ears. They do feel a little bit odd at first, almost like they are about to fall off your head, but they never did. Because this is an over-the-ear design, you will likely have to turn up the volume more than normal as sound will leak out.
We immediately noticed that these headphones have a very natural and reserved sound to them; nothing is over exaggerated. Bass is nice, tight and deep, mid-range is warm and highs are crisp and bright. Overall, the Aiaiai Tracks headphones have a wide sound-stage with vocals sounding a tad distant.In our call tests, the microphone picked up our voice and users on the other end could hear us loud and clear without us having to hold the mic closer to our mouth. That said, if you are in a busy area like a bus station or airport, you will likely have to both turn up the volume to hear the other party better and hold the mic up to your mouth so they can hear you clearly.

Overall, the Aiaiai Tracks headphones with mic are a very cool product. The design is unique, they sound great, and the Apple compatibility is the icing on the cake. The Aiaiai Tracks headphones are not for everyone though, as the design and fit are both subjective, but as far as over-the-ear headphones go, these are some of the best sounding ones you can have for under $100.
